Company History
After growing up on a farm in the Texas Panhandle, Bill Piehl served two years in the Army during the Korean War. He returned home to earn a degree in agriculture and economics at West Texas State College (now West Texas A&M University).
In the service, Bill had worked with high pressure compressed gas tube trailers. By the time he graduated from college, the compressed gas industry was beginning to grow, and Piehl saw potential. He and a partner launched Western Sales & Testing in 1963 in Amarillo, Texas, with a single contract and a minimum amount of equipment.
That business has since expanded to five separate companies, multiple product lines, and thousands of customers across the United States.

Skills Needed
The Western Group utilizes a “Job Evaluation” process that identifies the key competencies required for success within the various job paths available in our organization. Our process assists our management and supervisory staff in determining a sound basis for assigning team members to positions that match their individual strengths and experiences. The program additionally provides a map for individual team member growth by clearly outlining the necessary competencies and skills required to advance within the organization. Finally, we at Western Group feel our program provides a basis for an effective program of employee training, performance evaluation, and advancement.
